Thanks to John and Col for representing us at the recent National Meeting and given that it appears that Bega is goer for next year and it has been decided to make it the National for 2009 it is probably time to look at the rest of the calendar for 2009.

This year as you know we competed in the Hellyer Rally out of Burnie, this was one of the most enjoyable events ever and is one that we might like to consider in 2009. The organisers are even willing to shift dates to accommodate any Victorians that also want to do Bega. Cost wise it was a lot cheaper than Bega, even taking into account the Boat trip. Entry is cheaper and the major event sponsor already indicated that if we can get 15 Vics to come over in 2009 (not just Excels) that he would tip in an additional $1500 toward the running costs. Entry fees are about the same as a VCRS (hence A LOT cheaper than VRC) and the event is a round of the Tassie State Series so is fully route charted (in colour)special stage rally.

Other events will probably be the same VRC events as the Excel Series in Victoria has always supported. The only question would be ROM.

Personally I will be doing Hellyer again regardless, and will probably NOT do ROM in preference to Hellyer or maybe even Bega depending on my point score at the time don't want to mis out on the P2 title like I did in 2007 by not doing ROM . We will also need to consider the Alpine for 2009 as the Excels are a natural in this event, and do hold their own. Automatic entry would depend on how many of the HRA lead up events you do so those watching their budgets need to consider this.

Over to fellow Victorian Competitors for 2009 for comment.

John,

You missed our meeting at Rallydrive where we discussed 2009 calendar.

As with each previous year the Victorian Excel Series is aligned with the VRC with the possible exception of RoM which we will discuss further when the situation there becomes clearer and the ARC calendar comes out. We will be going to Bega, we always go to Bega.

Hellyer is a fine rally, but it is in Tasmania. It costs a lot to get there, particularly once you start taking service crews etc. Not all of our teams have the budget to go there, nor the time it takes to get there and back.

Same for the Alpine. The Alpine is the best rally in Australia and for many a "must do" event. (bit of bias here, I'm on the Organising team), but it is predominantly an event for pre 1980, 2 wheel drive cars. The Excel fits into the spirit of the event and are welcome to run, but it is a huge undertaking to run in it. It is more than 3 VRC's in distance, over all day Saturday, until very late on Saturday night, and a large part of Sunday. It is a long, hard, expensive endurance event which does not suit everyone. Realisticly for most it is 3 nights accomodation for crew and 2 service crews, with long distances to cover. It is a Closed to Club event so there is also the requirement to be an HRA member (which is Australisa's best rally club) and there are usually many more than the field limit wanting to run.

Feel free to run in Hellyer and the Alpine and any other event anywhere, I encourage everyone to run any as many events as their budget allows, but the Excel Series in Victoria will be similar to previous years as the teams have already discussed and decided on this.

Didn't know the 09 calendar was going to be discussed in September before the Victorian event calendar is even out, we've never discussed it that early before. But hey if it's set it's set, sorry that I wasted your time with my banter....

In relation to the Alpine that is why I said.......

"Automatic entry would depend on how many of the HRA lead up events you do so those watching their budgets need to consider this"

Although having been an offical for two and competed in the last Alpine the fact it is only held once every second year it is well worth planning annual leave around, my service crews re-signed the moment the last one finished....
