Stuart Lister has told me that although it is primarily an Historic event, the Excel Rally Series cars and crews will be welcome to run in this years Alpine Rally, run from Lakes Entrance on 24/25 November.
Fantastic event, long distances, variety of stages, great stages day and night running over 2 days, just like the ARC Alpines of the 80's.
To be eligible to run, you will need to join the Historic Rally Association as it is run as a closed to Club event to keep the entry cost down.
More info later.

OK, so who's thinking of entering the Alpine?
Surely it's got to be the highlight of the rallying calendar for the 2WD fraternity!?
With Fazz Mk II due in the week prior, I'm going to stuggle to make it, but I'm not giving up hope. What else am I going to use the baby bonus for
Maybe if there's a few Excels entered then some of the other guys may be able to help out with servicing. Just thinking out loud....
So, anyone keen?
Cheers

Hi guys and girls
I will be entering the Alpine as we did in 2005 I have to make a decision on Excel or Gordini
It is truly a great event and well worth the effort, don't forget that each team has to supply officals and they must be over 18 and licensed.
Service won't be a huge problem I am sure we can all share the load

being so close after Natcap, i probably wont run in the Sprinter, Mat may run in the Excel if the Budget allows,
Ill jump in the silly seat for you Glenn if you need a nav and end up going.
Im sure i can drag Mathew along as crew.
Ben.
I would like to go and we are thinking about it pretty hard.
Harv is looking at running also much to Mrs Smiths dislike.
Although Hev should have a pretty good rally car by the time the Alpine arrives. There is nothing more motivating then entering a rally in the wifes car.
Team Stigma has been put on a Iron and protein diet
Cheers Mick

It's great that we've got some people thinking about it. With its reliability, I reckon an Excel is a great car for the Alpine. I'm sure a top-10 finish wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility ;)
I'm currently working on the theory that if Harvey is allowed to go (Hev is due about 2 weeks before Jess) then I'm in with a chance.
As far as a Nav is concerned, I reckon you'd be pretty hard-pressed to prise Anna out of the seat for Alpine. She's probably more keen than I am!
Ben, I reckon you should ditch the Natcap and do the Alpine instead....I suppose it depends on where you are in the championship, but the roads would have to be 1000% better than Canberra.
I'll have to consider how we could provide licensed officials, but that's a relatively small challenge in the big scheme of things.
Cheers

I will be thinking about it.
No, that's wrong.
I already thought about it. I start preparation today )))
Hmmm, the only question is "Will the Excel be ready by then, or will it be 180B-time?"

I'll be entering but most likely in a V8 P76 with some borrowed bits from the Excel, though our team may end up entering both cars with a guest driver in the Excel.

I was originally planning on running the Laser, but some casual conversations with the road director may have changed that now - we were talking about a particular photo of a particular rally car and he said something like "It would be sooooo sexy to have one of those running in the Alpine", and then I casually mentioned that I knew someone who owns a genuine ex-works one. If it all comes together then I will certainly have the best nav ride in the Alpine:)
Lets just say it's got nearly 400bhp, and came out of a factory in Italy.:hoot:

Has anyone sent the expression of interest yet?
I have, but not in an Excel...

EOI sent...
September 14th is the last day, for those who still thinking.
By now they have more than 130 entries for 100 place field, and I have no idea how the selection process works :potstir:
Excel certainly does not fit a description of a "most exotic car"

Selection process is on the website. It is our experince that many people are building cars for the event and have put in a EOI, some of them won't be finished on time so the next on the list will then be included. Bronni and I have supported several HRA events both as competitors and officals and Stuart and his team have been quite taken by the Excel concept. In fact last year in the HRA's 4 pointer event I can third outright and got nothing but support from the other HRA competitors. I'm hedging my bets with the Excel as I intend to run a P76 V8.

As at Friday night there are 53 entries already in. There are still 21 of the "pre qualified" entries to come in, so everyone who has not yet sent their entry in, do it real soon !!!

Thanks John,
yes, looks like we will represent the excel community alone
We will be "self-servicing", so any help will be appreciated. I will talk to Mick to see if I can borrow some spares :) - the format where you can rejoin after missing some stages vouches for that.

I am not that keen on Vodka but a good dose of Jamieson's Irish whisky at about 4.30 p.m Sunday would be ok.

Look at the Dave's comment on VRB requirement for triangles to comply with Australian Standards wtf:
Does anyone have that kind of triangles and can I borrow them for the Alpine? The other option I guess, is to buy them the week before, (try not to use them :)) and return to the shop after rally :naughty:
I'll check that mine have the standards marking and if they do you can borrow them. I know the bag they are in doesn't because I brought one of those kids camping chairs from bunnings just for the bag-as a plus my daughters love the bagless chair

Andrei,
The Vics are a bit toey about safety triangles, they must conform to AS 3790-1992.
From memory i think they have to be free standing in a 30 km/h wind with a side of 400mm and use two types of reflective material. Your regular plastic reflector material and reflective tape. (or something like that)
what sort of triangles do you have now??
Andrei
25-10-2007, 12:21 PM
I have two from SuperCheap auto. They did a job two times :), but I can't remember them having any marks conforming to the AS.
I just thought, for the interstate car, can this be forfeited?
Tell me if I am wrong, in NSW rally rego allows to run without mechanic handbrake (not the Excel regulations though) and without a cat converter. Where in VIC, both are compulsory. This should not be a stop for the interstate competitor?

The "Dave" as you call him had a suggestion last year on Vicrally that the triangles could be from a European car Volvo or Mercedes Could be cheap from a wrecker and probaly come in a very official looking container.
Of course your usual ploy of a supply of vodka may overcome the problem.

I am already bearing somewhat exaggerated reputation in terms of spirits  so for something like triangles will try other avenues first :)
BTW John, you mentioned whisky just a few posts earlier :)
Does anyone know how to approach Dan Murphy to strike a sponsorship deal

Narva make the triangles and they come in a neat box set of three that you can bolt to the boot of your car, by taking one out you have room for some basic tools and we also keep a couple of reflective vests and rags in there. They are available from truck supply companies for about $30 if you buy two sets between three people you'll have enough for three cars (but you'll only have two boxes) and save heaps of money and be legal in Victoria. Also make sure you hand brake has a rachet that works.

Hi guys,
I need someone's help to do the pre-event scrutiny in Sydney a week before Alpine in exchange to negotiable commodities.
Thanks
