Hi fellas,

I was referred to this site by one of Grumblebum's mates (Ryan with the bluebird)... It's amazing how small the internet has made the world!

Anyway, one of the guys I work with has an old purple (now a lavender colour :p ) 4-door excel that he doesn't use anymore, and he's been looking at getting into motorsport. I mentioned the Excel rally series to him and he loves the idea. Neither of us have any rallying experience, but both have an avid interest in the sport.

We're looking at building his car over the next few months (it'll probably stretch out to 6 or so).

Questions:

What sort of memberships and licences do we require to compete (CAMS licence, car club membership etc)

What registration fees are there to compete in the series?

Is there that much difference between the twin cam motors and single cam motors? The motor that's in it is pretty tired, so we're trying to decide whether to rebuild the SOHC or go with a second hand DOHC.

How do we go about obtaining parts at the 'rally price' through Hyundai?

As far as sealing the engine, do many people get it checked out by a scruitineer (if so, what's the procedure for doing so?), or do they take the second option in the rules (seal it and if there's any dispute the engine is then checked).

I'm sure there will be more questions, as we'll be doing most of the build ourselves as we both work in the automotive industry, we're both electrical accessory fitters, but I grew up in my dad's mechanical workshop, swinging spanners since I was old enough to lift them. As for anything we can't do, we know people who can.

Anyway, I'm gonna spend some more time reading through the forums, I've been lurking here for the last week, but I'm sure I've only just scratched the surface.

Hi JonoS and welcome .That bloody Ryan has been giving me heaps for my foray into excels Never mind I'll bung a excel fee on his next bill. You will have to join a Cams affilated Car Club -one that is Rally orriented would be best and they'll get you onto the right path with regards licences and safety gear. With the Excel series you only need a cage/harneses/tripmeter/quality lights/fire extingisher and the appropriate driving suit. Sounds a lot but with a bit of evilbaying and using the people mentioned on this forum such as GLS motorsport who are in Qld and are ready and willing to help[I have used their services and am more than happy with both price and service].
You will find the answers to most of your questions on the site but dont be affraid to ask questions--remember there are no silly questions only silly answers!!!!!!!!and if you dont ask you dont get .
To get Hyundai deal register with the series in Qld a small fee is payable and they will help you register with Hyundai.
Good luck and keep the group informed of your progress Cheers Peter
