A purely personal review of a limited 2009 season – I competed in just two rallies (and only finished one!) My perspective on Excel Rally 2009! Please feel free to add additional awards or nominees or comment on the nominations / winners below.

Best Driver
Tony Moore – umm… where did he go? Modesty restricts Tony from letting us know how good he is… Dusted us all though and gives us something not to beat next year… but something to aim to get closer to… Rumours of a house renovation gives the rest of us hope that he might not turn up all the time and let someone else win!

Best recovery
Peter & Sue’s Excel after inverting itself at the Excel practice day (not something we’d advise you practice!) but turns up and runs second at Akademos only 2 weeks later… Good job and hopeful of keeping Tony honest next year!

Softest Effort
4 blokes without their Missuses in a strange town (Yea for Akademos) at the pub – counter meal and 2 beers each for the night – bed by 10pm! Rallying makes blokes sensible? Matt, Joe, Darren and me have a good hard look at yourself!

Clubman Award
Col Hardinge, John Carney, Tony Moore – I am sure there are others closely involved too but in Vic these 3 guys are a dynamic driving force! The drive day at Bendigo was the most awesome experience of the year – and not the driving bit! Just standing back and taking in the atmosphere – where else would you find Australian champions common place – what a buzz sitting in the silly seat with a former (or current!) Australian champion (for 70 bucks!). Eat our rally dust every other motor racing series in Australia! Thanks again the organisers! (Apologies to anyone else who has done bucket loads but these guys do stand out!)

Best Day of the Year Award
Drive day at Bendigo – for the reasons above and the fact that I suffered no car damage – unlike my two attempts at rallies… Once again, Australian champions, unlimited track time – awesome!

Best Fleet Manager
John Carney – rumour has it he owns 22% of all Excels ever produced for the Australian market (around 300,000!) Thanks for the door for the Excel John!

Longest Drive Award
A personal one - note to self when crashing out of a rally make sure it is convenient! Ending the day at the furthermost geographical point from Service Park means a long road back, then a long road to recovery then a long ride back to base – then 5 hours home! Roll on Akademos 2010…

Abandon Ship Award!
Whoever is silly enough to leave the Excel Series! Seriously why would you go anywhere else! Those 4WD things are exotic to drive but expensive to fix!

Post your thoughts here!
