G'day,
Won't be going as work has been really busy (poor excuse!) I am frustrated as this is the closest rally for us 'Westerners' (Horsham) but without any seat time and the car needing some fine tuning it is unlikely... I think Joe will be only just back from Qld so won't be ready either... Watty has disapppeared! Good luck to all those that enter it is a really good rally (my first one last year)!
Cheers, Simon

Tis disappointing, and I'll second the motion that it's a poor excuse:potstir:
Was looking forward to you and Joe making a return to the series too, don't worry about insufficient seat time, that's what rallies are for! Might have to try and get to a SA rally at some stage?
Do you reckon you'll make it to Akademos or Rally Victoria? It'd be good to have a full contingent at Rally Victoria.

Hello rally people,
Just a quick reminder again for the need for officials at the 2010 George Derrick Rally. If you haven't had a call or sms from me, I don't have your phone number!! Or save me the call and register directly @ http://www.georgederrick.com/officials/
We still have plenty of adventurous road closure & control positions that need filling in - with a mix of stages, we've got some sections for the hard core officials, and other stages that don't require you all day & night. Everyone should be well and truly out of the forest and on there way home (or enjoying the post event activities) before 11.30pm, in fact much earlier (but that depends on how many crews enter!!)
This years event has great support from the Pyrenees Shire, Wimmera Hills Winery, Sallys Paddock (Redbank Winery) and Batronic, which has allowed us to give some extra special "extras" to all officials in appreciation of their time & travel spent in the forest.
Cheers,
James

George Derrick 17 July 2010
10 Excels turned up to do battle in the 2010 George Derrick in Avoca
Stage 1, seemed like a short stage after the monsters at Bega, tight twisty and, at some points, muddy. A section that didn’t inspire confidence for anyone. For us, I really didn’t like the way the car was feeling and didn’t get any confidence at all. So we were happy to make it through and hoped the second stage would wake me up. I got a shock to see Steven had beat us by 37 sec on a 10k stage! I later found that I had looked at the wrong cars results and he had won the stage by 10sec from Ged with us a further 2 sec behind, whew, not as bad as I thought.
After a decent liaison we arrived at stage 2. A first for us; the start of stage 2 was also the start of stage 3 so we were merged with cars heading into stage 3 at one minute intervals. About 4ks into the stage the road veered left for the stage 2 cars and right for the stage 3 cars.
Stage 2 was a short stage and the roads looked awesome but gave no grip, the Excels struggled with the long uphill corners and I still wasn't confident. On liaison to stage 3 that we nearly came to grief, a washout had been graded straight ahead over a crest and it looked like the road but the road went sharp right; We turned in and nearly understeered into a tree. When we repeated the stage later at night it was apparent that I wasn't the only one, lots of straight ahead skid marks and more than one mark on the tree.
Anywho, going into stage 3 I felt more confident to attack, given we had just done the same start for stage 2. A more aggressive approach appeared to be the right remedy and when we left the repeated section the road changed character into a grippy easier to read road, (well I thought so anyway). The car had been very oversteery all night but it didn't take too long to get used to it once I got my confidence back, (well if you call half way through stage 3 not too long anyway). The liaison at the end of stage 3 was a shocker, it is the only liaison I have been on which had 3 double cautions!
Stage 4 was a blast; grippy little roads between farmers paddocks before heading into some tight undulating heavily treed fanging. Great fun! The stage then opened back out between paddocks with a nice jump before the end of stage. Heat one was over. It is a strange concept, that I am still coming to terms with, you can end up driving for a finish half way through a rally and then having to get back into it for the next heat. Steven had trounced us by almost a minute and Ged was closing in just 20 sec behind with Danny in hot pursuit a further 15 sec behind.
In the second battle Peter and Sue held out JohnC and Stu by a mere 4 sec with Daniel and Matt just 16 sec behind. Daniel and Cathy finished off the Gunnawyn battle by beating Kimberley and Sandra by 1 sec with PeterP and Tyler bringing up the rear.
So back into it for Heat 2, and 5 night stages.
Sheesh, stage 5 was a short 3ks and stage 6 had been shortened from 11ks to 4ks due to lack of officials, to make it worse, the navigation and roads on the way in were atrocious, (I'm sure the recent rain didn't help). The stage wasn't much better but it was a good change of conditions with dips, yumps and bumps all through to keep us all on our toes.
Stage 7 was a repeat of stage 4 but in the dark. Steven was amazing, dropping only 12 sec off his day time for a 10k stage! His night time was better than our day time, and we'd done the stage last year too, WOW! We had a spin in stage, (our first since Begonia last year), on a corner that had powdered up, so we probably lost about 5 sec, even so, Steven thrashed us by 30sec!
The final stages were a repeat of stage 2 and a repeat of the start of stage 3 before turning off onto the legendary run down the hill for 26ks of driving bliss, (and navigators terror). This rally is worth attending just for that one stage, although Nikk swears she is never doing it again. I had been feeling flat all day but that stage really made the day. Steven took the stage from a very happy Ged by 12sec with us a further 34sec behind.
So at the end of Heat 2, Steven was first Excel in 10th outright, followed by Ged 1:27 behind in 12th outright, then us 0:11 behind Ged in 15th. Peter and Sue won the night time battle beating home Daniel and Matt by 1:08, who just pipped the constantly improving JohnC by 8sec. Danny and Rickki-Lee finished 13sec behind JohnC after having a comfortable lead going into the last stage only to see John put in a blinder on the final stage to take the position. Daniel and Cathy had an engine that wouldn't start which ruled them out of the second heat which left Kimberley and PeterP to do battle for the final positions. Kimberley triumphed beating Peter home by 1:18.
In outright results for the event, Steven came home 11th, then us in 13th 2:33 behind, Ged 10sec behind in 16th, (it's tight, 4 cars separated by 10sec). 2:21 behind Ged was Peter and Sue who were a minute in front of Danny and Rickki-Lee. Danny lead JohnC and Stu home by 21sec with John just holding out Daniel and Matt by 8sec to finish 19th, 20th and 21st respectively. Kimberley and Peter hung on to come home 24th and 25th out of the 34 starters.
Well done to all and a big congrats to JohnC for his first top 20 in a VRC event!!
Now we just need some pace noting practice so we can take it to the NSW guys in November. On that note, don't forget to come to the Excel practice day on Sunday the 15th of August at Bagshot!!
On a personal note we'd like to pass on our thanks to the organisers, who had a hell of a job finding the 130 odd officials to run the event for a field of nearly 80 cars as well as finding liaisons and appropriate stages. It really was a marathon effort and we greatly appreciate your efforts. We would also like to thank Norm and Darden from Bendigo Specialist brake and clutch and Scott Nichols from Bendigo Tyre Centre for all their support. You can't go past a sponsor who lies on wet grass to do an alignment on your car at service while you watch, thanks Scott.
