I am after an opinion as to whether it would be legal to remove the charcoal cannister from an Excel series car based on the current regulations.
e. The original fuel pump may be replaced with an external electric
type. The fuel lines, fuel pump wiring and relay system may also be
replaced or relocated. An additional fuel pump and/or surge tank
may be added.

Is the cannister consdiered part of the fuel system?

Obviously the fumes from the fuel tank will need to be vented into the atmosphere away from the occupants and not leak fuel in the event of a roll over.

There would be a reasonable weight saving as well as a simplification of the plumbing in the engine bay. Not to mention one less thing to go wrong.

In NSW emission rule do not apply to rally rego cars. This may not be legal in other states from a vehicle registration perspective.

Well im looking at this now as well, only because ours got crushed when mathew hit the tree and we didnt replace it,
I dont think Fazz has one in his car, but i could be wrong.

I thought the canaster was technically part of the emission system.
It just also acted as an overflow for the fuel tank as well,

Ben.

I would say you would have to have one as it does form part of the emissions laws.

My cousins car had to have one even though his fuel system was replaced with a new fuel cell, lines, pump, surge tank etc just to be road legal.

not sure if it applies to rally cars???

The (NSW) Excel regs dont mention anything, and then says that everything else falls under the Group N regs.

I cant see anything about emissions stuff in the Group N regs, and my understanding is that if the regs dont specifically allow it, you cant do it.

Soooo - the short answer is I reckon it needs to stay. (?)
