Volume Knob?

Okay, I've just picked up an early X3 (late-94, Single cam, non-AC, non Power Steer), and it's got a weird little knob on the right of the steering column, near the rear fog light and instrument cluster dimmer switches. It appears to be a master volume control for the radio?

It also doesn't have the factory operators manual, so is this a standard fitment, or is previous owner weirdness?
