Just about to fit the new dash however as the car has a cage where the legs come down before the dash we're having some trouble (a lot of trouble) getting it in. Has anyone been able to fit a dash through the windscreen opening or will I need to split it and rejoin it to fit it? seems a pity as it is uncracked and brand new.

Also I'm thinking of doing away with the heater control panel and using the area for the fuse panel and a toggle switch array to turn the fan on/off to just turn on demist after setting all the vents to demist & heat I'll put an inline gate valve in the heater hose to turn heat on and off has anyone else done this and do you have any pics?

Mine was vey tough to get in and once it went in we all said it was in for good and not gunna come back out.

being new they are a fair bit more flexable then an old one. we cut the old dash to use as a template around the front legs and intrusion bars- you just need about a foot each end.

we had someone stand in the engine bay and pull the dash in the centre. It kinda just sucked into place more or less

we don't run the std heater stuff but next time would.

Have you thought about getting it flocked?

Thanks Mick, I just needed to know whether we could get it through the opening if we took the screen out. No Kidding it's flexible. As for flocking I read about how you did it on the I30 I will do the same. I just found a brand new (70s) rear window demister kit, so this means the heater can come out. Thomo looks like I might need a bit of help getting this in.

Demister kit = FAIL.

Don't bother.

I did the same, and on my recent aquisition of a spare car, have reinstalled the heater. They don't work. Not designed for laminated screens. The proper heated ones have the heating wires between the laminated layers.

The worst thing is that Mick did tell me all this, and yet I knew better and went ahead anyway. :spank:

Retaining the heater core with all it's functionality isn't a bad thing.
It allows you to take extra heat out of  cooling system. We kept the factory heater setup in our Corolla we took to Nurburgring and it was a godsend. It helped with both driver visibility and assist with pulling down engine temps on 33 degree daytime temps. You can have it plumbed so when you sellect full heat to floor vents, it gets pumped outside of the cabin. In our case it was throught the passenger side door jam via a usually grommetted whole. I don't think that sort of thinking is outlawed in the regs.

Thanks for the tips folks we always had a misting problem in the mark 1 rally car because of the damp and cold conditions in victoria. Mind you for most of the time we didn't have roof vent. Maybe I'll just keep the heater and use the method of fitting the dash as Mick mentioned. Maybe we might need to look at a group buy for a heated front screen.

Windscreen coming out tomorrow, the dash is getting suede trim instead of flock and will go back in Thursday and will have to go in via the Windscreen opening. New screen next week. Terratrip 303 with both wheel and gearbox sensor (thanks to this forum for giving me the right part number to order) fitted and working, Bronni will have to get used to a floor mounted re-set pedal this time as the Terratrip is now on the dash. I'll then get it ready for rego before doing the seat mounts.

Fried the ECU when we accidentally put the main positive on the negative, its OK though had a bucket of them still as no one seems to want the single cam ones.

Still looking for a race suite for my new navigator (medium womens) but I'm thinking maybe a single layer from Box Hill will do till she gets used to it all. Scored some second hand Velo Podium II Seats in Budgie Yellow for $300 (with Velo Mounts) also six point RPW Belts with eyelets New for $230 each at the Auto Saloon Show here in Melbourne

Will be entering Bonni Doon as the first outing but I'm still not sure if it is a day night or not. Will post picks of the modified "Double D Cup" light pod which we now have the mold for and can be reproduced for about $50 in materials if you want to borrow it and make your own that should be fine.

Went go carting tonight as my first drive in anger for a long time, beat my PB average by 2 sec so very happy.

Well thanks to Thommo coming over last night we did get the dash in. Mick your right they are one hell of a lot more flexible new than old. Literally smashed two other old dashes in the test fit, but the new one just folded and popped into place with one long lever and a foot pushing it.

Windscreen going in tomorrow as is side glass. Thommo is going to help with the seat mounts in a barter arrangement. We intend to debut the new cars at Bonnie Doon.

I will fill all the spaces with photos when I get this forum and my computer with the pics together this is written from the work computer.

Fired up the Excel for the first time in 8 months, all new fluids filters leads and plugs, took a bit of turning over but it did fire. now one set of front mud flaps wire the Terratrip and Terraphone up couple of extinguishers and it will be rally ready. Will be leaving standards seats in while it gets road worthy then off to rego and we'll look at putting the Velos in then.

Well roadworthy has been done but VicRoads won't reregister the car now, because it "looks" like a rally car, everything other than inside the struts is bog standard, the rollcage complies with the VicRoads standards but no it looks like a rally car. It still has the standard front seats and seat belts!!! So anyway that was all for nothing getting a registered engineered car from Qld total waste other than it came with cage. Vicroads don't recognise interstate engineers reports (the cage) and have now decided it needs a engineers report from here (aproximately $450) based on this they might consider it. So I've decided to go temp permit and sell the car and start again with a car with registration before I make it look like a rally car!!!

John, check out rhe Rally Permit scheme, details on Vicroads website. MUCH cheaper than it used to be.

I have just been through the process. There was a bit of paperwork involved but it was not as difficult as you think. Yearly reg is approx $380. Much better than uvp each time if you plan on doing more than 5 rally's per year and much less hassle before each rally. Let me know if I can help. Im more than happy to give you all the details.

Yep the old rally car was on Rally Permit but it means I can't use it for promo purposes in the way I had planned. I will do the temp permit until I work out how many rallies I will do, the problem is I no longer have a permanent navigator and I like the team approach in the car and planning the events. But hey Rick might want to do the same who knows? He'll be there on Monday. In the meanwhile I'll put the application in for a Rally Permit if CAMS staff can work out what I'm talking about, rang three times today talked to 3 different people and each time eventually disconnected. I'll wait till after the historics at Phillip Island this week and see if they are more receptive to talking to a rally person as they have the application forms.
