View Full Version : Interstate Challenge Pointscore

I have been meaning to post this so that everyone is clear on how it works.

The Interstate Challenge pointscore works as follows:
Each team needs to have the same number of competitors.
So if NSW has 7 entries and Victoria 8 then the highest 7 seeded competitors from each state form the teams.
The points are then allocated based on the number of competitors in both teams eg NSW 7 + Vic 7=14
Points are allocated for the outright ranking within the Excel competitors. 1st =14 point 2nd =13 points and so on.

This year, the NSW Excel Series is only running the shorter event (7 stages) in an attempt to contain costs. The challenge result will be based on outright placings after the end of ss7.

So to use last year as an example
Seeded Excel Entries were;
54 Tom K VIC
58 Paul, VIC
60 Glenn, NSW
61 Emma, VIC
67 John C, VIC
69 Mick G, NSW
77 Robo, NSW
78 Greg M, VIC
79 David W, NSW
80 John E, VIC
90 Andrei, NSW

NSW entered 5 Excels and Victoria entered 6.
Then each team would be made up of the number of entries from the smaller state (eg NSW with 5) based on the event seeding only the highest 5 Victorian Excels scored points.
Unfortunately John E missed out.

With 10 Excels making up the two teams points are awarded from 10 to 1 for 1st to 10th.
see attachment

Hope that makes it clear as mud for everyone.
:hyper: Can't wait to see which state has Excel supremacy and what the what the national pecking order looks like.

Rules for challenge? Just had a quick chat to some of the Vics our understanding was that seeding had nothing to do with the final point score it was in fact top 4 cars from each state as they finish, just like any rally. Points allocated on finishing order. First 20 points Second so many and so on.. add up the points split between the states and you have a winning state. While I'm flattered to be "seeded" I think that we shouldn't be penalised as a state because we managed to get more cars to the start line, similarly we want the best NSW crews on the day to be part of their State's effort and be counted for their effort. It's all about recognizing effort on the day. We can't recall any discussion last year or when the challenge was decided that seeding would be used to determine the "team" prior to the event especially since we didn't have a seeding last year the starting order was pretty much determine on entries received and stage times for the previous rally.:grouphug:

John,
Nice try :D The rules for the interstate challenge work as per the event supp regs.
This is how it was last year and how it has always been for the Bega interstate challenge.

19.4 The number of members in each team will be
determined by the smallest number of starters from
each eligible team. i.e. NSW field 80 entries, ACT
field 20 entries and VIC field 10 entries the
number of scoring members in each team would be
10.

19.5 State of Origin teams will be selected by class.ie if
there are 4 N4, 4 P5, 2 P6 and 3 P3 entries in the
team with the lowest number of entries the other
teams will be selected by the highest seeded entries

in each class

In our case class is Excels.

The teams are formed based on the start list whether it is seeded or abitary is up to the organisers.

Also need to remember that the challenge is based on the short event (first 7 stages only) as this is the length of the NSW Excel event.
Even if all the NSW competitors choose to do the long event.

I can honestly say that the seeding issue was not known or discussed at any of the Vic meetings and until an hour ago the founder of the series in Victoria was not aware that it was part of the interstate challenge rules. Given that last year not many of the Victorian drivers had a seeding the starting order at Bega was thus determine by previous stage times in one case based solely on the performance on 1 stage of one rally that resulted in a DNF on the next stage (sorry Greg M).
Given that it is our series (NSW, Vic, SA and TAS) I don't think we have to follow any precedent, in fact one interstate challenge could hardly be called a precedent.

As we are your guest we'll go by the rules that you were so quick to find and quote. But from our perspective I think it was our understanding that the best crews on the day would be rewarded….. hence we went away from last year as the moral victors just like Sir James Hardy at the America’s Cup, just watch out for our winged keel!!!

It sh*ts me to tears that the regs have been posted here for over a month and not a single person had anything to say until the proposed regulations potentially might disadvantage their state. Apparently there are a couple of young inexperienced guns who don't have a decent seeding yet.

So having spoken with John Carney, we have agreed that Victoria can nominate which four drivers will represent them before 6:00pm on Saturday (providing everyone is happy with this arrangement.)

BUT, don't get on here complaining if one or both of your guns go off the road and DNF causing Victoria to lose the challenge.

The reason this is not equitable is (to use a footy analogy) The VIC team has two reserves in case of injury and NSW has none, so in the case of an DNF Victoria would still have a four man team and NSW would be a player short. It might be fine now but if the footy boot is on the other foot.

Matt, please stop insulting us by calling us "Melbourne people" we are not Emma, JC, DC, JE and most of the rest of the Excel people are not from that back water the majority are from rural areas and some even own sheep stations...... which on current estimates are worth about as much as a X2 Excel with rust!

Can cope with mexicans tell you what though I'll shout you a Corona if you win you can shout me Bondie blonde if you win! No one really wants a sheep station at the moment I'd suggest that would be a prize for the looser. I'll shout you a Corona regardless.

Hey guys, this is my first post hope it works!!!
as far as i am aware cause we are doing a nsw event, we run on nsw seedings so only the vic crews that have competed in a nsw event are already seeded, and vic seedings do not come into it... Having said that the 4 guys and gals selected from vic will more than likely be our top 4 seeded guys anyway!!! Anyway looking forward to catching up with all nsw guys on saturday arvo and sunday RALLY ON!!!

Hi Dan,
Welcome to the forum. Hopefully the first of many posts. We could sure use more input from Victoria on here to keep a balanced view.

I'm pretty sure Graeme Roser (the CoC) merges the NSW & VIC lists together based on a lot of experience and seedings of some of the top competitors who are on both lists.

Having said that the 4 guys and gals selected from vic will more than likely be our top 4 seeded guys anyway
:headbang: That wouldn't surprise me. Just had a load of hoo-ha about nothing. :slap:

With no offence to anyone, i would have thought that experience and consistency rather than inexperience and speed might be the correct selection criteria. As a single DNF will probably decide the challenge.

I have spoken to Graham on this issue of seeding Vics and NSW competitors and he hates it and it proves a big challenge every year, trying to find people that have crossed borders before to be able to get a comparitive point every now and then. Not as bad at the top as it is further down the field as most of us average speed people don't have big budgets to visit other states with our car in tow.

Congratulations to Team Victoria for a great performance to deservedly win the Challenge!

We can't wait until next year now!

Cheers
