Prompted by Tony Moore's experience in the Getz, and the comment that the ratio's in the box are better than the Excel - I did a little research

(JC, yes between going to the pub!! :) )

Attached is a spreadsheet outlining the differences. The spreadsheet was developed using the results of the Gearcalc Program. It doesn't look (on paper) that the Getz ratio's help with the 2nd to 3rd 'hole' that much.

What was your experience in the car as comparison Tony?

Cheers

Stu.

depends of course on how you drive and use the power
power is pretty much at 4000rpm+ and suprisingly quite a flat torque line
so if you can drop the revs right down into the start of the power band your getting more legs out of the gear before you change again
with the getz box you've got about 400rpm more to play with from 1-2-3
indeed doesnt sound like much....but from what i have heard on hyper forums, it does change the way the car drives

That info doesn't gel with the info I found when researching boxes a while back.
The getz box was:
Getz: 3.615, 1.95, 1.37, 1.061, 0.825, FD = 4.056
Perhaps Hyundai has made changes to Getz ratio's over the years.

In about 06 there was a gear ratio change- i think final drive but not certain. the 1.1 litre getz from the UK has the best ratio's i believe.

Greasy you cannot change the ratios in the excel series cars :)

The car itself does feel quite different, it is about 130 kilos heavier than the Excel and although they normally run 14" wheels we have elected to run 13" to keep ratios down. The car doesn't appear to pick up speed like the Excel either but I am not sure if this is a perception or reality because it is such a quite and comfy car to drive.

Gearwise it feels like 1st is lower and 2nd is higher and third around about where the Excel is.

Have a look at this footage from the start of stage 10, you can see the tacho clearly at the start and it appears to drop about 1800 rpm from 2nd to 3rd. It is a bit hard to tell but I think later in the video I go into fourth and it doesn't seem to drop much at all, (could just be me backing off and getting back into it too, you be the judge).

Ignore the 1st to 2nd change as we had been having trouble with that so I left it a bit longer to ensure it engaged.
