I noticed on the results for the East Gippsland Stages that two of the Excels are competing in class N2.

Doesn't N2 require homologation with the FIA?

Do Homologation papers exist for the Excel?
I'd be interested in a copy if they do.

I belive Col is following up on this it appears they have been submitted overseas as the Hyundai Accent X3.

Another bloke to speak to is Mark Thompson. He ran his Excel at RoC in 2000 but it may have been a 'Group A' version. Try contact him through Penrith Brake and Clutch.

I thought in Australia we are alowed to extend the homologation for 6 more years ??? ill check the manual

the manual says

"FIA Group N which are either currently homologated, or for which the homologation expired less than four years ago"

I'm not entirely sure, though, 'cause there's an earlier homologation for the Pony, under the X2...

You're likely to be in a class by yourself (instead of P2, which is dominated by the F16 style Charades/Mirages/Civics/etc), and you could enter international events (if the car was within the homologation limits).

An N2 car would be a bit more difficult as the rules are a bit more strict in being stock in some ways than even the excel series. Keeping a lot of your interior in place for starters. I would not have thought they homologated it as a 2 seater so it would possibly mean running rear seats (although at least they fold down) and the rest of the standard interior. You would have to check the homologation papers to see what they decided on the beasts. So you carry a bit extra weight.

P2 is a good compromise for simplicity and cost.

The Thompson mobile used to be a group A car and that thing could move. He came third outright at Ulladulla one year in the thing, and thats running against the crokers and all sorts of good machinery. Anyone that witnessed it in action was suitably impressed. It drives me to wanting to one day take my car up to that spec for the adventure, but on todays budget it is about 20 years away.

That used to be the case, but the Group N rules changed back in the late 90's, and you have to keep a certain amount of interior, but certainly not all of it, and certainly not rear seats.
