I have a bit of an Excel 'project' that someone may be interested in?

Its a 1995 Excel Sprint (SOHC - Silver in colour). We originally bought the car to replace the cylinder head on my wifes road Excel, on which the timing belt had broken.

The car has had a small hit to the front-end. It needs the drivers side chassis rail pulled straight, plus a new drivers side gaurd, headlight and a bonnet, plus the valves in the cylinder head replaced.
Apart from that, its in really good condition (ie, it still rolls on all 4 wheels fine, engine started and ran fine before removed).

The car is currently stripped back to a bare shell, and most of the tar based insulation has been removed in preparation for seam welding. Depending on the buyers wishes, I'll put it all back together, and can complete the seamwelding & plate the rear arms for a little extra if required.

I'm looking for $650.00, but may be a bit negotiable.
I also have some other rally bits such as a spare race seat, 2 x Aust standard harnesses and maplight available.

I'm located in Canberra. Please feel free to contact me if you want any further details or pictures.

So cheap, wish I had a few spare dollars at the moment and I would grab it as a spare, but that would be a waste as it is to good for that. Needs to be built into a rally car.

One last attempt!

I am happy to look at offers, otherwise it will be sent off to the metal recyclers or hocked on Ebay...

I would be keen but it is a big drive to Canbera from Hobart and back.
really anoying because all the cheaper excel's seem to be in N.S.W or Canbera.

If you are only going to send it to recycling I'd probably give you a couple of hundred for it as its going to cost me $150-$200 for the petrol to come and get it.

Sorry for the thread hijack - we are finding this is true in some cases in Adelaide as well.

Go ahead, Dave. You may soon recover the cost by re-selling silver body parts to one of the competitors

Hi Damo,

You say your wife's SOHC threw a timing belt and needed the valves replaced but I have been told that these are not an "interference" motor so valves shouldn't hit pistons. Are you able to enlighten me? Did something else happen?

My car seems to have thrown a belt too so I am curious as to whether I am up for valves as well

Thanks

I have seen broken timing belts causing head damage from valve strike, so can testify to it happening.

We can start a new thread if you would like to enquire further about this subject.

Hi David,

I was told the opposite! Being the trusting soul that I am, I didnt ever get around to measuring valve clearances or anything to double check (that could be an expensive mistake!). I did have more that one person tell me that they were an intetference engine though.

You could definitley see a few nice shiny indentations in the piston tops, at exactly the point where it looked like the valves should hit....

Let me know if you get this confirmed either way - I may well have a perfectly good engine sitting here then!

Sorry on reflection I have only seen the twin cam engines and original reference was to single cam.
