Hi all

Well I took the plunge and bought an excel yesterday :hyper:

A genuine one owner 1998 Twin cam manual 3 door complete with power windows, power steering, spoiler and AIR CONDITIONING :hyper:

The car cost $2500 on ebay. This is probably more than most would think to spend on a car and its probably a cheaper option to go to the auctions and pick up a damaged one or a roughy.

But watching the auctions over the last weeks there are very few twin cams and those that come up are either pretty stuffed or going for more than $2500 k anyway.

This one has a great body and paint so I dont need to do anything on that front which is great cause I hate body work. I also needed a runabout for the next couple of months so this fits good.

So the plan from here is a slow build up over the remainder of the year and a start in next years series.

I will try and document the full build up including costs as I go.

The airconditioning can stay till it needs to be taken out.....luxury!

Heres the exciting first shot! :slap:

:hail:Great move.

That is actually really cheap for what it is, so it sounds like a goer. Only thing I really suggest at this stage is to replace the cam timing belt as you see a fair few of these things for sale with broken timing belts and damaged heads.

I would (as I am lazy) leave the air and P/S in for now. Hot events like Nat Cap and Mini'Dulla, you can make up time by performing better being cooler.

Once it is totally a rally car then you can remove the P/S pump if you want more feel for what the wheels are doing. I swung my car around a motorkhana track today and it was alright without the pump, but that was on grass (not me, the car).

Hi Dazzler,
great work, it looks in great shape.

From what i've seen the Burgundy ones are the fastest Excels, in NSW anyway.

If you don't need the power windows I'm happy to buy them particularly the LHS as my navigator can't reach the window winder. Will swap and pay with a manual winder if you want.

Dazzler,

I think you'll be happy that you paid a bit extra for one that has been looked after. It's a very good investment.

Good colour too :)

Cheers

Damn, your onto my cunning plan of changing names/numbers at the start and back again at the end :slap:

I was real impressed with the standard power output on the way back from sydney. Even took the "old" pacific highway out of buladelah and had a wee play.

Only whinge happened when I grabbed drive through maccas on the way home......where the hell are the cup holders

In the big blue bibles the job looks straight forward. Will photocopy the pages or scan them if you want. I think from memory there is a plug on the power window version where the window winder handle goes.

Hey

Well I must be jinxed....or maybe not.....

Been doing boring stuff as i slowly build my excel. Engine out and rebuilt, flywheel machined, new clutch. Cooling system overhauled.

Cibies bought, intercom bought you get the picture :)

Then today little old lady from across the street backs into excel and crushes RF door Front guard pushes slightly into bonnet, breaks headlight, indicator and bumper.

Shes insured so off to the panel shop for a quote. Panel bloke suggests they will just pay out on the damage in cash.

So it will be interesting to see how much the damage is so will start pricing out spares..... might come out of this with some xtra cash :hail:
