So here i am. Finally got around to registering on the site. Figured i should say hello to some fellow Hyundai drivers..

I've got a big white J2 Lantra, thats seen a total of 3 events (as many as me as a driver..). It's in my 4th year of ownership, so it's been a slightly disapointing run so far - but seems to be gettign better..

Took it out for it's first run for the Dell Classic stages rally in Canberra a few years ago. Was one of he last cars on the road - We got through the first stage ok, setting a reasonable time. Unfortuntaly, the 2nd SS, about 6ks in, the car came to a halt - an fault somewhere in the electrics ended the day much to soon.

About a year & a half later, after some moving around/focusing on work, I entered the NatCap rally last year. Again, we got off to a reasonable start, and cleared the first 3 stages nicley - with no dramas showing up. Just as we rolled up to the start line on the 4th stage, the car dropped a coil - Due to the nature of the day & other influences, it ended what was begining to be a good event. (Fault was a mismatched ignitor/coil combination). Got that resolved, then looked forward the the next event i'd enter. Yay I had a total of 40 competitive kms - After two years!

Round 1 of the Victorian Rally Championship - Cerberus stages.
This event is always going to mean a lot for me. First time ralling in Victoria, first time with my new first timer co-driver Cathy, and in a car that was yet to finish an event. 3rd time lucky i was indeed! Being a rather wet event, & me desperitly wanting just a finish, we went into it just aiming for that finish. I later discovered that we were the quickest 2wd on the 1st stage. Absolutly blown away by that - still to this day. After suffering the loss of a trip meter at the end of SS2 (hit a missive rock during a transport...), and not being able to see the road (except for the finger tip patch on the screen) due to a surprsing foging up issue, we some how managed to finsih 16th outright, 2nd 2wd, 1st clubman, & 1st novice. To this day i still wonder how.

This all in a standard Hyundia Lantra, that has a fancy exhaust, overly tight suspension, standard motor, button clutch, & hopefully some brakes that have just been rebuild making it stop a little bit better.

See you all out there at the G.D.

James

Ok, so some might have been aware, & some not, but the Lantra has been on a "life extention program", and is also having some half decent upgrades done to it as well.. Here's where it's at..

Firstly the body was suffering from some fatiuge, which hopefully has now been resolved by a vist to Rai Currie, at FabRaiCations.. There was some some reinforcing added to the car, new & improved seat rails (Cathy needed lower mounts so the seat "head wings" could fit snugger, and I got mine done again for a better fit as well), and finally some added bars for improved protection for that occurance we don't don't want..

We got the car back a few weeks ago, and hit it with several paint removing methods for the internal parts of the car. The paint inside had never been done propery from when i got the car, and was progressivly getting worse & worse. So whilst the car was an empty shell, I decided to tidy up the floor pan. roll cage, and engine bay.

After a few long days of detail cleaning, stripping, cleaning, degreasing and more cleaning, followed by preping, cleaning, etching, then cleaning, we finally got on a couple of layes of this bute paint product POR-15..

These are the results!

From here, I now have to reinstall the seats, gear stick and handbrake, so I can work out where to fit the new hydro handbrake. Once thats done, the dual master cyclinders go in, and the new lines will be run around the car..
Then the fuel lines go in, add a few plugs where various electrics have had to be cut, install the steering rack & plumb teh lines, add an engine, gearbox, put the hub bearings in, and wiring in the Monit! Somewhere there I'll also get my hand on my new suspension... and a buck load of more things as well!

Got until the 18th of March to have it all done.... fun fun fun!

Good job Jimbo
shame it's not an excel :(

The WRC look alike dash.. Just have to drill two tiny holes, and add the shift lift LEDs...

A selection of stuff, mainly the new brake systems with hydro added! The aluminiumumumum panel is the access cover to the fuel tank..

And finally for now, the car starting to look a bit more normal inside..

I added teh tyre pics, cause this is the first time i've ever owned new tyres! looking forward to getting them dirty and feeling the difference.. I had been using 2nd hand 196/65/15 Dunlops & Silverstones, but will now be running Dunlop DZ86s thanks to Stuckey Tyres!

Looks like it's coming along nicely!

What's the reasoning for the cloth on the dash? Would it be hard to clean dust out of?

Also, what kind of master cylinder is on that handbrake? I'm trying to find a low cost option for our excel.

Idea is to cut down on glare/reflections of teh dash onto the windscreen, + it holds a bit of a wank factor for me :-)

The m/c for the handbrake is a 3/4 PBR unit.. It came with the Handbrake assembily, which was purchased from FabRaiCations..

Picked up the last major new bit for the rally car friday night..

Rob has made up some off his custom stuff for me, all hand build etc. Should make for some better handling hopefully..

Front and rear have around 150mm of travel each, with 170 pound/inch springs for the front, 115 for the year.. We took a bit of a gamble on these spring rates, but given the other various settings should be good.

Good soild and strong struts, just need bonnie doon to come so we can test em out!

The strut tops arn't on all sets at the moment, hence why it might look a bit odd at the top ends..
