Hey ya'll
Would an excel series car be eligible for group N? If not why?
Just thinking about the WRC coming to my homeland next year (though, i'm really not holding my breath), and would be interested in building to group n (or indeed technically group a) whilst retaining excel series compliance....
Thoughts?

Not sure, I now a couple in Victoria ran as N2 in a rally or two at the start of the year. I think that Col Hardinge was checking whether the homolgation was still valid.
Does anyone know the outcome?

I've checked with the Vic Scrutineers and confirmed with the CAMS Manual, which says under Section 11: Road Events. Rally Car Eligibility:
FIA Group N which are currently homologated or for which the homologation expired less than 4 years ago."
The Excel was homlogated in Group N, Homologation No 5508, Pony 1500 GSI, homlogated on 1/04/1994, expired end of 2001 and Homologation No 5554, Pony Excel (Accent) 1.5 16v, homlogated 1/05/1996, expired end of 2003.
Which all means that id you have a single cam, tough luck, you are out of time. If you have a twin cam, you are ok until the end of 2007. Assuming of course that the car actually complies with Group N.

ok, so even if the car was log booked as group n this year, i'd still be out of luck in 2008? Or as far as the FIA is concerned was I out of luck back in 2003?

For a WRC round, you were out of luck in 2003.

It's possible to post the specification for Group N and Group A FIA?

WRC cars need a CrMo cage LOL.:potstir:

That's cause WRC teams (and Nascar for that matter) have the proper equipment to bake an entire cage to red hot...

And from what I have heard it would cost about $40,000 to build the cage/shell as they do.

Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT), has not been required for CrMo welding since 2001, when an alternative detailed SMAW welding procedure was developed. This proceedure has been found to be so effective that the real cost of builds of CrMo cages dropped by more than half overnight. Making CrMo the most effective weight/performance material for use in all car race applications. If cage builders have not passed on this saving is another story, though Ethan has obviously found a builder in SA. There are examples of Bond selling CrMo cages to Toyota Drifters in Victoria that are competitive in price to the MS.
