View Full Version : Rear wheel bearings

I have recently noticed a freeplay in both rear hubs. Possibly a result of both wheels receiving a strong side hit at Bega.
Undoing the big nut and tightening to the upper torque limit removed the freeplay.
Now one hub is making a light roaring noise when rotated freely.
As bearings are sealed and can’t be inspected, what is the best course of action?
Play safe, dig some money and get a new hub? Leave it for one more rally and check after that? Get a second hand hub?
Is the noise the only criteria of a problem bearing? Would overheating be an indicator as well?
P.S. it's a 99 model with detached drum and sealed bearings.

Replace them Andrei. If you don't want to spend the dollars, get a second hand set (they are about $150 each new). Anything from a road car should be OK for a season. Make sure you run the dust caps as the dust will wreck them quick smart.

Check what Genuine is worth, but I could get the whole hub unit brand new to you for $135 each shipped. Or if you want those ones of the road car I've got, let me know and we'll work out a price!

I was quoted yesterday 40 for two hubs from wreck.
The aprrentice was lasy, and took the whole lot (drums, knuckles, hubs, few arms) off the car, rather than just hubs. Then boss could not find him to take the hubs off, so for 40 bucks I ended up with much more iron in the boot

Sharing my last night experience with those who may need to replace rear hubs or drums.
Looks like Hyundai has changed the drum bore and corresponding hub diameter somewhere between 96 and 99. They do not mix-n-match as a result - replacing hub involves replacing drum as well.
Good midnight discovery wtf: , but lucky to have drums as well :wiggle:
