Noticed that some earlier models had a steel petrol tank.
How do they compare on weight? Which is more reliable in rallies? Does metal tank still need an underbody protection?

Mathew (i mean me) still managed to stuff a metal tank,
and when he pulls his finger out and get the plastic one of Mick we be able to tell you what the weight difference is,
We still Fibreglassed ours as its very easy to put a rock through them.
The Fuel pumps are different as well.

Mr Vodka man
Shabs old car has a plastic tank which has run with out protection and has survived so far, lots of marks but no major damage. My car has a thin sheet of aluminium under the straps seems to be working fine.

I destroyed the metal one and have fitted a plastic one and if anythig it seems like it will be able to take a bit more of a hit as it can flex. It seems to me that the plastic one is bigger as well, not that we use that much fuel.
I am still yet to fit some protection but as my straps are nearly dead, if I find some new straps, I will do something and fitting a sheet of aluminium sounds like a good idea as my fibreglassing ability is pretty low.

I used 1.5 mm hi tensile aluminium sheet (same as road signage material) drilled 4 holes with a holesaw and folded the front and rear edges then simply bolted up

I might go for a drive this weekend, one night, and have a think about it :naughty:
Sounds like a good idea. I don't think the kangaroos are as bad around here as they used to be.

I'll put a plug in for my sponsor he has a nice kevlar one that fits nicely and is a bit stronger than fiber glass cost is reasonable but you'll need to ring him for a update. Fabraications in Victoria
