Gday, I've been in rallying for 2 years. I'm in the WestLakes Auto Club at Awaba (NSW). I'm thinking of selling my datto and getting in to the NSW excel series sometime in 2008. I've mainly been doing Khanacross and rallysprint but did my first rally at the Bago 150 a few weeks ago which was great even if we did finish on 3 shocks and a broken axle!

The datto 1200 is a bit long in the tooth(!) and parts are hard to come by. Whereas there is plenty of Excels around...

First thing I need to decide (after aproval from the wife! :hail:) is whether to build or buy an Excel already built...

cheers
Brendan.

Cool.

I reckon build it and keep all the receipts if you decide to sell later on.

Its really only bolting / replacing parts not really developing a car from scratch plus you get to do it right the first time.

Many moons ago we lost our years lead in class in the last event for the year when the driving lights shorted out - they were fused throught the fuel pump .

So my 2c is do it yourself and you will know where everything is in the dark one night

good luck

Jason : so the lesson there is fuse the driving lights separately to the fuel pump I guess!

Is it best to get the DOHC excel? Seems the DOHC has got a few more kwatt's...! and a better diff ratio for rallying.

Or buy a SOHC and transfer all the good parts from the DOHC in...seems like more work but maybe cheaper.

I think the biggest factor is that it is not very often an excel rally car appears for sale. To add to this, if you already have the rally gear, seats, triangles, fire extinguishers, harnesses, trip meter, intercom, then you really only have to bolt in a cage and you can be running. You will get more for selling the datto in bits anyway and that would fund the excel. The upgrades can come as you have the time and funding.

By the way, excels would be extremely quick at awaba as for any khanacross track.

Engines are cheap so get what car you can from late 95 on (search this forum for more info) and the differences in performance don't seem huge.
