To just get in and start rallying, all you need is an X3 excel (varies but from about $2000-) and then some basic safety gear, roll cage (from $1000-), harnesses (from $200-), fire extinguisher (from $40-), first aid kit ($20-), triangles ($10-)etc.

The car must be fitted with mud flaps behind all wheels (big durable mud flaps as outlined in the cams manual). (price depends on how innovative you want to be from zero dollars (I used a laminated plastic paper clip board on a car several years ago))

If you fit a sports steering wheel (you don't have to) it can't have any wood in it.

Then to make life easier for your nav (people occasionally do with out but it is not recomended you also need a trip meter (from $300-) and intercom (bike ones from $40- but better of with a decent one for a few hundred).

You also need a helmet, and if you want to go in a state round then you need a race suit. That is going to depend a bit on what state you are in.

That would get you into it. The beauty of the excel series is from just being able to run to having a car built to run at the top is not that expensive (relatively) as a full outright competitve car could be built for around $10 000. This would get you competitive with the quickest excels in Australia.

You need to get a rally licence when your getting closer and these are about $125- and you need to do 2 driving tests to get this, such as a motorkhana and a khanacross which if your lucky could be done on the one day. These are a really fun way to start and you can do these with your standard car while you are building it (you don't even need a cage). This will get you training on throwing the car around for the quickest possible way around the corners.

I have probably forgotten some things, but keep asking anything you can think of. If you are near Sydney on the 20th Jan, come to the open day as you will learn heaps, see the cars up close and get to ask any questions and have them answerred on the spot.

Hi guys

Here is most of the build costs for our Excel. I know there are some expenses that are missing but its a good list for people to consider.

Now we didn't get this much to run the cars and we didn't spend anywhere near this amount in 2006. It's always easier to go down on budgets then go up. Most of the middle list didn't get spent and you don't want to know how much the decals and artwork cost.

We brought everything new and as you can see we spent a lot on this gear. It was important for us to built a car that best represented Hyundai hence the degree of preparation.

[QUOTE=blu997;87]Hi guys

....... and you don't want to know how much the decals and artwork cost.

QUOTE]

Car Graphics can seem expensive but they must be seen in the context of what they get you - if your sponsorship (or pursuit of sponsorship) requires the graphics be in place then you don't get the sponsorship without them.

Get a quote and talk to the sponsor about the whole package - it is no good securing $1000 worth of support and then spending $800 of it on signage (unless it is maybe an initial gesture with a plan for future negotiation). We always suggest that you build the signage cost into the sponsorship as some corporates are able to split the expenditure between different cost centres e.g. the support may come from the Promotions budget but the signage might come from general admin expenses or something.

I am not sure who Blu997 is (Mick?), but if we took the Hyundai-supported car as an example of a fairly complex and very attractive job then our price to do that car, including designing the artwork and mockups; producing the graphics in premium quality vinyl; and installation at our workshop in Prospect might be around the $2k mark (conditions apply :D ). I should add that we did not do the graphics on this car and I do not know what was charged so I'm going out on a limb here :o !

If you had 5 small supporters who were prepared to chip in $200 for their stickers then you would already be halfway there even without a major sponsor.

Also, if you are going to be chasing serious support, consider including mockups of the car in you initial sponsorship documents - a picture is worth a thousand dollars..err..words!:D

I didn't intend this post to be an advert (well maybe a little :p ) but I would hate people to be put off by the cost of making their cars look as good as possible thereby lifting the image of the series. Image and presentation are critical to growth and acceptance.

See you all on Saturday.

Dave

Everything you say is absolutely correct and was taken into consideration when we first did the orginal budget 2005. Yes you need to consider this when aproaching sponsors. James at Motorgraphics has done some decals for us in the past and we will in future be contacting Dave and James first.

The problem we had was a middle man issue where we were using a marketing company to co-ordinate the process. They have some nice cars out the front!!!

I did however want to get the second opinion (like going to the doctor) but this was not too much of an option at the time. We have since parted company with these guys and are dealing direct with signage suppliers saving a considerable percentage. The service from Motorgraphics has been great and the guys have always come to the party at some short notice. I'm a strong supporter of rally supply network and always prefer to spend our money with rally people.

Most of the rework that has been done on the cars has been the Victorian car(sorry Greg) and the rework that had to happen to my car was done straight after the Bay 2006 when the car went to Melboune.

Lastly I fully support Dave's thoughts on having the cars look as good as possible. I have found that good presentation of the product has helped us get additional Sponsorship. Our car must look OK as Ema's car is very close- The only difference being the pink is on the outside on Ema's car as opposed to our skirts.

Cheers Mick
