Hey all
Im a student in Qld (uni student if my op comes back alright) . I realy like the idea of the excell rally, have found this forum great and i would realy like to get into motor sport and rally. But like many the money/funds dont match the ambition.
So here come the questions - if they have been already asked feel free to link me to the relevent post.
1. Ok so i dont have the money or skills at this point to start rallying but what do people think of the idea of buying an excell and Khanacross(ing) it for a bit? This gets me involved in motor sport and builds skills and i can slowly build the car up over this period with an aim to rally.
2. So, then i need to be part of a CAMS associated club - any suggestions? (i live in brisbane), I was thinking Brisbane Sporting Car Club.
3. Then finding the car, how much do these repairable write-offs go for? - remember I have little or no mechanical skill but I'm not an idiot (as far as you all know - haha) so how much is needed to fix them?
4. Roll cage wise i see bond is popluar - how easy is this to install - i am no good at welding so i would probably con a mate into helping me, could us amatures fit this to standard, and also what equipment in needed.
5. And in the long run how registrable are the cars ? (roll cage, stripped and underbody stuff) - how manny people have them registered and did they have any difficulties?
Thanks everybody hope to talk to you again - either online at a club meet or at a race soon.

Hi Mate, I cant help you with most of those because I too am only new to the excel scene, but two I can.
1- Your on the ball. I havent got any experience with excels in terms of khanacross, but by all means, get one and start practising, and Ive found a good thing to do from my experience is to build a car from what breaks... (heh, its only left me high n dry about 9 times :P but the method still works!)
5- It depends on what you do, in terms of full road registration, I beleive your not allowed to have a roll cage that extends between the dash and rear of the vehicle (so for your side impact/ intrusion bars- need to be removable), you need to remove the rear seat stays, and seta belts when theres no back seat, and re register as a two seat (not JUST a two door) and also see if your harnesses are ADR approved, if not, they need to be removable and you need to retain your stock belts for driving on the road... Thats to be fully legal.
Also, thats the NSW guidelines, QLD I think you can get away with most of it if you find someone generous enough with the powers to give you a mod plate for it all?

BJ

Perfect! Khanacross, Autocross, Motorkhana get all the skills and you don't need rollcages, racing seats etc
2. So, then i need to be part of a CAMS associated club - any suggestions? (i live in brisbane), I was thinking Brisbane Sporting Car Club.
try www.cams.com.au down the right hand side of the screen is a club locator and you can choose the sort of discipline you are after, (Rally, circuit etc). Club membership usually in the range of $80 to $150 a year.
3. Then finding the car, how much do these repairable write-offs go for? - remember I have little or no mechanical skill but I'm not an idiot (as far as you all know - haha) so how much is needed to fix them?
Not sure of the regs in Qld but in Vic you need to get a certificate B4 the car can be re registered which cost $440. I put a wanted add in the paper and a price I was willing to pay, picked up a single cam 96 model for $1200 with a RW and 6 months reg, no stuffing around, entered in a khanacross the next day!

Thanks for the replys i think i will take your advice Mooa and try to find one that has a rwc - im in no hurry so i can afford to look around (read: i cant afford to do anything but look around - hahah)
I downloaded a form from the Brisbane Sporting Car Club website - directed to it through the cams site, it seems i need proposers or sompthing to sign the form what is the deal with this - i assume these are people from the club in question. How am i meant to get proposers if i dont know anybody?

1. The right idea. Khanacross are fun and the excels are very quick. I beat one of the guys who is one of the quickest (if not the quickest) 2wd rally cars in NSW (in his rally car) at a khana. They call me a cheater now because I drive an excel and they have no answer for it.
2. I don't know clubs up there, but find one that does a lot of khanas as many clubs only run club events so you have to be a member of their club to do it. Only way to find out is by looking at their websites if they have them and ringing them up if they don't and asking them what sort of events they hold and how often. Our club membership is $35- a year as a guide (south coast NSW).
3. Try and check out damaged vehicle auctions. They are listed on line (fowles and pickles). An ideal starting point is a hail damaged car as you don't have to repair it, but it still comes cheap as insurance companies have written them off. Otherwise just let people now you are looking for one, even local used car dealers as if a rough one comes in, they don't want it but want to do business still. A friend of mine got one for $400- this way (a rough but driving and registerred twin cam).
4. Roll cage is the hardest thing. A bolt in option makes it easy and transferable if you wreck the car. Need to keep an eye on changes but at the moment they seem like they will be around for the foreseeable future.
5. My car was fully registered with engineering for the seats, suspension and roll cage (welded in with side intrusion bars (mounted lowish to meet requirements)). It is cheaper for me in NSW using a one event permit at about $25- per event so I dropped rego this year. You need to find out if Queensland have a similar system as it makes it easy. While I was paying full rego fees I wanted use out of it but don't mind it sitting there so much while it is not costing me a lot (no more than an expensive set of golf clubs really but a lotm more fun I think).
Get to an event and start talking to the guys or start by getting a ride as a nav as you then learn the insides of the sport before you drive, which is pretty esential in my book.
Good Luck.

Lokiy,
The Gold Coast Tweed club (membership $60/year)seem to run quite a few khanacross events. The BSCC (membership $98/ year) is mainly focused on rallies, so they don't appear to run many events that aren't directly related here (maybe 1 motorkhana a year?!). The Northern districts club (membership $30/year)run a few motorkhanas a year (one on this sunday at Caboolture) so they may be a club that offers more events that you could afford to enter?
I'm surprised Greg hasn't jumped on here yet, as he's the driving force behind the Qld Excel series and could offer you some advice as he lives and competes in the SE corner.

Lokiy,
I can personally recommend the Northern District Car Club as a nice friendly club.
