OK, you wanted me to buy an Excel so I did.
Now I am going to annoy the shirt out of you with questions:D
Somebody pointed out to me that there was some engineering or tooling arrangement between Hyundai and Mitsubishi at some point in the past.
Is it therefore possible that VR4/Lancer struts might fit Excels? I will do some research in the next couple of days but if anyone already knows the answer that would be helpful.
If VR4 or Evo stuff fits there maybe second hand stuff around that could be worth looking at.
Cheers

My original excel had koni struts out of a front wheel drive lancer in it. Much of the hyundai tooling developed from Mitsi stuff, but some things evolved more than others. Luckily suspension didn't seem to go to far. I might be able to find the koni part numbers still so I will have a look around tomorrow.

Thanks, Dave, but don't go to any trouble.
I'm thinking if the Lancer strut itself bolts in I could search for some second hand Lancer/VR4 Rally struts rather than just compatible inserts thus getting adjustable spring seats, thicker tubes etc.
I have some VR4 samples coming this morning to measure and compare.:D

David,
The Mitsubishi fronts should go close, but the rears are different as the Lancer uses a multi-link rear end...so no strut.
Even it they don't bolt up straight away, it should just be a case of plating and re-drilling the strut ears so that they fit the bolt spacing on the upright. My Bilstein spares are actually the old ones out my Suzuki which were modified in such a way.
The most important thing is that they are not externally adjustable (due to the series regs). A lot of the ex-Evo stuff is likely to be adjustable....but I'm sure there's stuff out there.
Cheers
Glenn

Hi Glenn,
I checked some VR4 struts against Excel ones and the bolt spacing on the ears of the Excel strut is much smaller. VR4 rears are shocks not struts, as you say.
Oh, well.....
